ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mae Chevrette is a self-taught mixed media artist. Born in Seattle, Mae paints in her home studio on the south shore of Massachusetts. She displays work publicly in her studio at the 450 Harrison Avenue Artist Studios in Boston’s SoWa arts district.
Her work resides in collections worldwide including View Boston at the Prudential Tower, Madison Square Garden, the Boston Harbor Hotel, the Millennium Tower and in O, The Oprah Magazine.
When not painting, Mae spends her days at the beach, on a boat, or home with her husband, two toddlers, and a handful of cats and chickens.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
“My paintings explore the relationship between place, time, and story. They aim to weave a visual thread between our own individual experiences in a place and the shared history of that place. A decade of solo travel instilled in me a deep reverence for what environmental and human stories shaped the landscape and my experience in it. I want to capture what a place looks like and also what it feels like.
My style of mixed media embraces experimentation. It pushes the boundary of what can be adhered to and scraped off a canvas. Each painting combines authentic, weathered material that speaks to the history of these places, and my own photography, which depicts the flicker of time I spent there. By layering my own original photography with acrylic paint, ink, vintage paper and found objects, I can emulate the natural wear and tear of time and travel. The antique maps, nautical charts, postcards and other relevant ephemera give my work a deeply tangible feeling of history. With this layered approach to art, I intend to stir feelings of nostalgia and longing in the viewer, and create a sensation of connection not just to a place but to all of its stories, past and present.”
